Young judo players from Borders-based Sportif Judo recently travelled to Ravenscraig to take part in the Scottish National Judo Championships, and there was a feeling of anticipation and expectation within the team.
Anticipation, as many of the players were taking part in their first National Championships, and expectation, as in the past seven years, Sportif had topped the National medal table and the current team members were keen to carry on the winning streak.
Initial nerves were eased when the younger team members took to the mats for the first round of matches and gave a good account of themselves with some skillful judo.
As the day progressed the team’s confidence grew and by the time the under-16 and under-20 players took to the mat the spirit within the squad was high.
With the younger team members in support, the cadet and junior (under-20s) competitors rounded off the day with a dynamic medal-winning display of judo, providing their young supporters with the perfect model of how to perform skillfully, as well as show respect and sportsmanship.
The final medal tally for Sportif Judo was 48 medals, including 18 golds – the club’s best National Championship performance and a National record for medals won by any club at a Scottish Championships.
