Seniors throw away superb start in a couple of ends

The only league action last week involved the seniors who had an away match against Balbardie in Bathgate.

Following a good start the visitors built up a healthy 36-24 lead.

Unfortunately, this state of affairs was set to change dramatically and in the space of two ends one Tweedbank rink lost a count of seven while a second rink conceded five. This was enough to completely eradicate the lead built up and the home side began to move forward.

The result was a lead of 21 shots after 15 ends. With only eight ends possible there was no way back for Tweedbank.

There were no league matches for ladies or gents on Saturday because of play-offs in the Scottish pairs categories. In the East Section, the ladies were at the Meadowmill stadium while the men were at Dalkeith.

Malcolm Thin and Alistair White’s opponents were an experienced pair from Falkirk.

The match turned out to be a close one and as the ends ran out the Tweedbank pair had a possible three shots, which if held would bring them very close, but they suffered a cruel blow when the Falkirk skip managed to reverse the situation, moving another three shots in front.

In the end they lost by 20-15.

There was a better result for the ladies’ pair of Marie Todd and Gail Lindores. In their first match against a pair from West Lothian they managed a three-shot victory. The second match was against a pair from the Headwell Club in Dunfermline, in which the Borders duo had a poor start and could not recover the situation, losing by 26-17.

Last Friday, the club held the Christmas game, followed by the dinner and annual draw. This event was in severe doubt on Friday morning with the large accumulation of snow over the previous night.

A decision was made not to cancel, however, and out of the 50 members expected there were just eight unable to make it.

The day was a great success, the winners being Olive Kerr, Jean Scott, Moira Weir and Paul Butterfield.

Members should note the club will close after the Hat Game tomorrow and will re-open on Wednesday, December 28 at noon.

The club will close again after the Hat Game on Friday, December 30 and re-open once again on Wednesday, January 4, when the seniors have a home league match against East Lothian.
