Seconds hold their nerve to take first win

Fjordhus Reivers II5

Edinburgh Uni VI4

Last Saturday saw the Fjordhus Reivers 2nds step out for their first game of the East District hockey season against a confident University XI.

The Borders team got of to a poor start and generally lacked composure throughout the field and, as a result, the visitors put two goals into the back of the net.

Some strong play from Lauren Grant and Skye Shiell in defence seemed to settle the Borders outfit for a spell. However, no sooner had play looked to be going their way than Uni made another break which led to a penalty corner and goal number three.

After some strong motivating words at half-time, the Borders girls came bursting out of the gates and Sara Robson put the ball into the back of the goal almost before the umpire had lowered her whistle.

This seemed to rejuvenate both teams and a disgruntled Edinburgh gained a somewhat questionable penalty corner to take the score to 4-1.

The game looked to be over for Reivers, but with 25 minutes to go, the hosts picked up their game and another Sara Robson goal gave hope to all.

Some great play from the young players Tara Aitchison and Lara Patterson led to scores from Laura Holmes and Ashley Robson and suddenly the match was all-square with three minutes to go.

The excitement was palpable as the Reivers gained a penalty corner.

A good save from the University keeper kept them in the game, but not for long, as the rebound landed straight at the feet of Lara Patterson, who slotted the ball straight into the corner of the goal to nail the victory.

Fjordhus Reivers II host Cala at Tweedbank this Saturday with a 12.30pm passback.
