Reivers hit Grange for six in first game

Reivers 6

Reivers embarked on their season in East Division One with a tricky away match at Grange.

With a new defensive system in place, Graham Lofthouse gave a league debut to Will Dixon, who had joined the club over the summer. There were also places in the starting line-up for old faces Stuart Ross and Bruce Montgomery, both of whom were returning after sabbaticals.

The game started much as the Reivers would have hoped, with slick passing and good movement carving open the home defence.

With just 10 minutes on the clock winger Jonathon Fletcher was on hand at the back post to round off a flowing move from the midfield. The second wasn’t long in coming – veteran striker Bell finishing well after driving into the circle.

Grange looked shell-shocked as Tim Watkin fired the Borderers three ahead.

Then the home side forced a short corner and had their first attempts on goal, but it was from a breakaway that they opened their account.

This gave a reminder to the Reivers that the game was not over and on the stroke of half-time Girvan popped up at the back post to lift the ball into the net.

The second half was a less classy affair, with both teams slackening off and the game became end-to-end. Grange again built up pressure and a penalty stroke was fired into the roof of the net.

The Reivers, however, rediscovered their fluency, with Bell making it 5-2. The scoring was rounded off by Watkin pirouetting into the circle before firing a powerful shot for the goal of the day.
