MORE than 250 children from the Galashiels area attended a hockey festival to successfully round off the blocks of hockey delivered in schools by PE specialists.
Organised by Borders Sport and Leisure Trust Active Schools, Glendinning, Balmoral, Burgh, Tweedbank, Langlee, St Margaret’s, St Peter’s, Heriot, Fountainhall, Stow and Caddonfoot primary schools all sent multiple teams to the event at Netherdale.
The sides were split into sections and played against teams from other schools. A group of senior girls from Galashiels Academy were on hand to umpire the games and offer encouragement to all players.
The standard of hockey throughout the morning, and the fair play shown by all teams, were excellent.
Organisers wish to thank PE specialists for preparing pupils for the festival and to the senior hockey girls for officiating.
Active Schools coordinator Anna Potter said: “It was fantastic to see so many children out playing hockey and getting a positive experience with their peers. It was a very cold morning but this didn’t seem to dampen the mood one bit.”
A hockey participation centre runs on a Thursday night at Tweedbank Sports Complex from 4.30-5.30pm. £2 per session.
