Lauder duo Stephen Kershaw and Rob Wilson have achieved their second podium spot of the season while racing against the sidecar elite at Brands Hatch.
Competing in the sixth round of the British Formula One Sidecar Championship, the Express Tyres/Blinkbonney Quarry team had the added challenge of competing alongside the leaders of the World Championship series.
Both sets of racers were competing for points in their own Championship, while the race provided a chance for the British teams to take on the world’s best. Two combined qualifying sessions took place on Saturday and the pole position was taken by reigning world champions Tim Reeves and Greg Cluze in a lap record time, with Kershaw and Wilson qualifying in fifth with their fastest-ever time around the circuit.
From the start of the 18-lap race there was drama with Reeves and Cluze pulling in on lap one.
The Lauder pair went back to eighth place with a host of World and British Champions in front of them, but by lap six they had moved to sixth place. Several sidecars crashed out and by lap 13 Kershaw and Wilson were chasing the Finnish four-time world champ Pekka Paivarinta.
His sidecar also crashed out and Kershaw took full advantage to finish in third place.
Kershaw said: “We are delighted with another podium spot.
“Today’s race showed that we can compete at the very highest level in this family-run team.”
The Borderers remain in fourth overall, only three and a half points off third-placed Roger Lovelock and Alki Alto.
