PEEBLES secured their place in the final of the Winter League with a battling away victory over St Boswells I on Sunday.
In the first round of matches Lewis Armstrong and Adam Drummond produced their best doubles performance to confidently beat Michael McGee and Martin Jeffrey 6-2 6-4 with some solid tennis.
In the women’s doubles tie Peebles’ top-class pair of Lisa Campbell and Juliet Smith were behind to Lynn Bruce and Lucy Tile midway through the first set, but dug deep to eventually take the rubber 7-5 6-2.
Campbell and McGee then teamed up to face Tile and Armstrong and once again found themselves behind and unable to produce the first-set recovery managed by the women.
However, a hard-fought second set went the way of the visitors and forced the match to a deciding tie-break, which was won by Peebles 10-4. In the second mixed doubles match, St Boswells’ Bruce and Drummond struggled to hold serve in the early stages of the first set, but equally, so did Smith and Jeffrey, and at a break for rain it was still tight at 4-3 to Peebles.
Following the short pause the home pair rallied and only just failed to force a tie-break before the Peebles couple forged ahead in the second set to win 7-5 6-3 and put themselves in the final.
