PEEBLES travelled to East Kilbride on Saturday for the finals of the Scottish Youth Cup and were delighted to return with the same silverware their clubmates had won the previous year.

Finals’ day showcases Scotland’s top club teams from under-13 to senior level, all competing to be crowned champions of Scotland.

Peebles entered teams at under-13 and under-15 age groups this season, with both performing well over the winter to reach the semi-final stage in recent weeks.

However, while the under-15s lost their semi-final at Paisley by only four goals, the younger girls waltzed through their semi, beating Edinburgh by 29-7 before facing Hamilton on their home territory.

Undaunted by playing in front of a large crowd including some of Scotland’s top players and officials, the Borderers pulled out the performance of their season. Centre passes were smooth, set attacking moves flowed and backline passes, practised relentlessly in recent weeks, went without a hitch.

Peebles took the largest squad permitted of 12 players, with all playing in at least one quarter of the match, demonstrating the depth of talent among this team. The squad brings together players from as far afield as Broughton to Earlston, who play in their respective school teams, but train together within the Peebles club.

The match ended Peebles’ netball season on a high, the only junior club in Scotland to have achieved championship wins within one season at Scottish Schools, Scottish Club and Scottish District level. Two of its players were also selected for the Scotland Under-17 team which played in the European championships.

Peebles Under-13s: Gemma Gass (Capt) (WD), Sarah Hudson (Vice Capt) (GS), Lauren Neville (GS), Alana Craigmile (GA), Lindsay Maguire (WA), Maisie Farrer (WA), Emma Axon (WA), Simone Bailey (C), Kerri Dow (WD), Shevaun Smith (GD), Lynsey Robertson (GK) and Alex Pender (GK).
