No hidden criterium

KELSO WHEELERS held a successful day of youths’ criterium racing at Springwood Park, Kelso.

The weather was very good and the dry, almost flat circuit with a smooth surface was ideal for this type of racing.

The event attracted entries from all over Scotland and the north of England with an impressive total of 69 youngsters taking part in the various age group races. There was fierce competition throughout the categories with a number of youngsters showing great bike handling skills, stamina, racing ability and potential.

A number of local youngsters were part of the entry list and Peebles CC had a strong attendance with a number of them on the podium.

These included Calum McGowan, Flora Gillies, Millie Hanlon Cole, Elena McGorum and Anna McGorum. Connor Telfer of Hawick rode well to a sixth place in the boys’ A category.

The host club were represented by Angus Millar, who worked tirelessly in the boys’ A section in his second year at this level.

He is a keen cyclist who has been a member of the Kelso club for a number of years and is a past winner of the youths’ Civic Week time trial. Hamish Carrick, who lives in Cornhill, finished third in the same section. He now rides for Edinburgh Roads Club and has been selected to ride at age group level for Scotland over the Easter holidays in Belgium.

Organisers hope the event, sponsored by W.E Howden Pet Supplies of Coldstream, will now be a regular event on the Scottish ‘Skinny Tyres’ series of closed circuit racing and thank everyone who took part and gave up their time to assist with the event.
