Chirnside Chasers entered seven runners into the National Cross Country event at Callendar Park on Sunday with six taking part in the under 13 boys age group and one in the under 15 boys.
In very trying conditions first home for the chasers in the younger age group was Kelso’s Oscar Onley who completed the course in 11.56 for an excellent 13th place overall.
This was Oscar’s first time at The Scottish Championships and even more remarkable is that he is eligible to compete in this age group next year. This continued his recent great form after winning the Northumberland Schools title. Oscar was closely followed by fellow Tweedsider Josh Abbott in 21st place (12.09), Rory Williams 25th (12.12), Jamie Kinghorn 38th (12.32) and Ben Reynolds (13.59).
A team event is awarded for each age group with the first four runners for each club counting and the winner decided by the lowest score. The Chirnside Chasers boys managed a collective score of 97 for their first four placed scorers which meant they finished an excellent second place behind Kilbarchan (87) with the bronze medal going to Giffnock North (100).
This was an excellent performance by the young Chasers team where they showed they were able to compete against the largest club teams from all over Scotland.
