On a morning when most in Peebles had battened down the hatches an eager group of runners milled around the start line for the third leg of the Border XC series in Haylodge Park.
With the wind chill and the driving hail, the temperature howled around -5 but an undeterred, vest-clad band of almost 100 juniors charged off through the storm on their two lap slog through the glaur.
First three back were Gala Harriers with Jamie Logan coming in on 8.25 minutes, Callum Tharme just behind in second and Yousef Khursheed completing the podium hat-trick.
Mairi Wallace, from host club Moorfoot Runners, was the first girl back in 9.03 ahead of Edinburgh AC siblings Emma and Katie Johnson.
The senior race was run in the squelchiest of conditions but it was like water off a ducks back for Gala Harrier Thomas Otton.
The Galashiels academy head boy sped round the four mile course to win his first senior race on the circuit in 27.01 minutes.
Lauder teenager Mark Sutherland was seven seconds further back in second place while student Gavin Bryson, also from Lauder, landed the last podium spot.
Rachel Haines (Hunters Bog Trotters) was first lady home in 30.03 with Gala Harrier Fiona Dalgleish in second and Sara O’Neil (HBT) in third place.
The fourth leg of the series takes place at Chirnside this Sunday.
