In what was the first Ladies’ Club Championship in 10 years at Galashiels Squash and Racketball Club, Sandra McCutcheon and Jane Logan played out a thrilling final.

Both ladies played out of their skins as they battled to be the first in a decade to get their name on the club’s champions board.

The pair used intelligence and cunning throughout the match to outfox each other.

McCutcheon took the first game quite convincingly due to some loose shots from her opponent, who tightened up her game in the second, using the wall and killing the ball at key moments. Not enough, though, as some excellent movement ensured McCutcheon took the second game too.

Going into the third game, both ladies were focused and had to think about their shots as some long rallies and quick movement by both players made for a highly entertaining finale and despite Logan’s best efforts, McCutcheon fought for every point and secured the match 3-0 (9-3, 9-4, 9-3).

After the match the both players congratulated and commiserated with each other, and said they were delighted to have had such an entertaining final.

“It was great to win the first ladies’ final in a decade and it was a fun match. These are exciting times for ladies’ squash in the Borders,” said McCutcheon.

The final was umpired by Agnes Burnie and scored by Rachel McAleese.

Galashiels Squash and Racketball Club runs a ladies’ night every Thursday from 6.30pm till late, and currently has 15 ladies involved.
