Gala Academy pupil Matt Dougall found out this week he has been selected to run for the Scotland Under-15 boys’ team in London on April 26.
The 14-year-old Edinburgh AC and TLJT athlete normally runs 800m and 1,500m distances, but this event will be a three-mile road race over the finish of the London marathon course, against the best age-group athletes from around the UK.
He ran his first road race at the Scottish Road Championships at Greenock last week, over 4,200m, and a fantastic run resulted in his selection for the Scottish team.
In February, running for Gala Academy, he gained a silver medal at the Scottish Schools 1,500m Under-16 event, and the resulting time 0f 4.23 placed him as number one in the UK ranking for a 14-year-old. A week later he returned to the Emirates Stadium in Glasgow, improving this time running in the U17 age group.
He has been invited to the Scottish Schools athletics association training day at Pitreavie this weekend as a result of his track performances times.
Matt thanked the training group and all those who have supported him from the clubs he runs for, as well as Galashiels Academy and the Rowan Boland Trust, which has funded him in the past.
