Borders athlete Guy Learmonth is targeting a place in the Great Britain team for next month’s European Indoor Championships after winning his first British Indoor Championship title.
Learmonth, from Berwick, led from the front in the 800m final at Sheffield’s EIS stadium on Sunday, crossing the line in 1.49.00, just ahead of James Bowness and Muktar Mohammed.
He now has just one race left – at this weekend’s Birmingham Grand Prix – to secure the qualifying time of 1:48.00 which would ensure automatic selection to the GB team that will travel to Prague next month.
“I’ve always ran around 1.47 indoors the past few years, so it’s not really a worry,” said Learmonth.
“I’ll go to Birmingham and have a good crack and hopefully run even quicker than my PB.”
Learmonth admitted he channelled his inner teen as he took his first British indoors title in the dramatic 800m race last weekend.
“I came out quick and ran like I was a teenager,” he confirmed.
In the end there was just 0.12 seconds separating the top three, but Learmonth was determined not to let the gold slip out of his grasp.
