Carnegie IV 2
EAST MEN’S DIVISION TWO
REIVERS were Kings of the Kingdom as they finally secured the Division Two Championship in Fife on Saturday.
Hosts Carnegie were the only team still able to catch the Tweedbank men.
However, any hopes the Borderers had of an easy coronation were soon dispelled as the Rosyth-based side made a strong start, pinning the Reivers deep inside their own half. Only a few last ditch tackles and saves by keeper Stephen Young kept the Fifers at bay.
The pace set by the home team had been frenetic – and was unsustainable. As proceedings slowed the Reivers’ usual passing game suddenly burst into life with Spencer Pitman scoring a superb opener, following a defence-splitting Reivers counter-attack.
Graham Lofthouse added a second and, though Carnegie continued to huff and puff, Reivers made it to half-time with one hand already on the league title.
In the second period, Peter Cairns looked to have made the win safe, popping up on the right wing to contribute a rare goal to make it 3-0. Carnegie, though, are famed for their tenacity: they gave the Tweedbank side cause for concern, working a quick free hit to pull a goal back.
Max Kulow made it four on the Forth for Reivers, but Carnegie again closed the gap and continued to press, keeping the Borderers’ backline busy in a string of short corners. In truth, though, the comeback was never really on, and Reivers ran out deserved winners.
After the match, Reivers captain Peter Cairns said: “We’re delighted to secure the Division Two title with a game to spare. We have tried to play positive hockey all season, and have had to work hard for our success. Well done to all the Reivers squad.”
Graham Lofthouse earned the sponsors’ man of the match award, turning a determined performance despite carrying an injury.
With the league title already in the bag, Reivers’ next turn their attention to the District Plate, facing a tough match against West Coasters EK Avondale at Tweedbank on Sunday.
