Junior badminton players from the Borders have returned from the annual Anglo-Scottish Invitational Tournament with one of their best results.
Playing at Tyneside Badminton Centre, Newcastle, over two days of competition, the Borderers played under-14s teams from seven other regions in Scotland and England.
The young Borders team performed brilliantly throughout the weekend, winning six out of the seven matches, and ended the tournament as runners-up to Lothian. Third place went to Cheshire/Derbyshire.
Despite a poor start, losing the first match against Lothian 12-3, the Borders bounced back immediately with a good 10-5 win over Lanarkshire and a strong 12-3 victory over Yorkshire B. With players’ confidence levels now raised, the Borderers rounded off the first day with some superb badminton and a good, solid 11-4 win against Northumberland.
Day two began well with the local youngsters securing an impressive 10-5 win over Yorkshire A. The penultimate match against the combined team of Cheshire/Derbyshire proved to be the closest of the whole weekend and a nervous time for team managers and parents.
Drawing on the confidence gained from earlier matches, the Borderers won three out of five tie-breaks and narrowly scraped through with an 8-7 victory.
The final encounter was against Cumbria and this ended with an emphatic 14-1 triumph – the best result of the tournament.
Team managers would like to congratulate the players on their sterling efforts over the two days of competition.
The Borders Secondary Schools Badminton Championships will be held on Sunday, January 25, at Earlston High School. Players are required to enter the competition through their schools and they should speak to their head of PE to ensure they are entered. Players entering must be affiliated to Badminton Scotland through their school.
The Borders Badminton Group would like to thank sponsors Topling Biomass Systems, Eshiels Gundogs & Greenvale AP for their support this season.
