Ian qualifies for Worlds

IAN MCCOMBE will join an elite band of Borders pool players at Blackpool for this year’s World Championship after winning the Region Three qualifier at Reivers, Galashiels.

The round-robin stages saw some cracking shots and exciting matches with rookies Craig Young and Kev McMinn showing up well in their first big competition, while Kieran Riddell and Kev Mackay potted well and unluckily went out in the quarters.

The semis started in style for Scott Simpson, going 3-0 up before Ian Middlemas fought back to clinch a 4-3 victory.

In the other semi-final, Scott Bowers and McCombe fought out a classic, with McCombe edging it in dramatic fashion.

The final went McCombe’s way, although it was keenly-fought with Middlemas battling throughout.

McCombe joins internationalists Bowers, Craig Reid and ladies player Sharon Anderson at Blackpool while Scott Simpson awaits a possible late call-up.

Reid told TheSouthern: “Ian showed his class today and won’t be out of place at the Worlds.

“It’s a great honour to represent your country and he won’t let us down, the Borders are definitely moving forward in the world of pool.”
