Peebles golfer Craig Howie is celebrating this week after helping his team from the University of Stirling become European Universities Strokeplay Team Champions.
Playing at St Gallen in Switzerland the fourth year sports science student was agonisingly one shot behind the individual winner, but can console himself with four impressive rounds, including a final round of 65.
“I was five shots behind with six holes left to play so I can be pleased with the way I finished,” said Howie, the 2012 Scottish boys champion, who made his team debut for Scotland at the Home Internationals in the summer.”
The Stirling men’s team took the title for the third consecutive time, finishing 13 shots in front of their closest competition, while their women’s team made it a championship double.
Howie, along with team captain Mathias Eggenberger were the only two of the five man team who featured in the victorious 2013 side in France.
“As a team we can be very proud and when someone looks at the results over the last four years they can’t fail to be impressed,” he added, it’s not easy to win tournaments, never mind three in a row.”
