Kelso High School came out on top with a convincing 5-1 win over Selkirk High School in the South Schools Under-18 Cup Final at Earlston on Friday.
Selkirk had opened the more confident side and scored through Jenny Wright from a well-taken penalty corner. However, in a closely contested first half there was little between the teams and Kelso got their reward for some good hockey with a superb strike from Lucy Murray at a penalty corner down the other end just before half-time.
That goal and a half-time talk from coaches Mary Weir and Kirsty Hill lifted the Kelso team and, as they stepped up, Selkirk struggled to contain the firepower, with Kelso captain Kirsty Logan and Tara Aitchison finishing off great teamwork with two goals each - the final goal from Logan a superbly taken reverse hit into the top of the net.
Both teams played some great hockey and Janet Jack, the former Great Britain player, who umpired along with Emma Pate from Earlston HS, complimented all the girls on their commitment and quality.
Thanks are due to Earlston High School for hosting the final and to the coaches, fellow pupils, parents, families and headteachers Mr Steele (Kelso HS) and Mrs Burgon (Selkirk HS) for their valued support of the teams. Winning team photo on page 87.
