SWIMMERS in Hawick are set to make waves of tidal proportions following the amalgamation of the town’s two aquatic clubs.
Following an EGM, Hawick Amateur Swimming Club and Teviotdale Amateur Swimming Club have announced that they will formally join to form a new club – Hawick and Teviotdale Amateur Swimming Club.
The new club committee consists of 12 people, six from each of the former organisations, while the coaching teams and parent helpers have also come together to provide tuition and training for the combined squad of 100 swimmers.
Work initially started in 2011 to look at combining the clubs and the idea picked up additional pace at the start of this year.
Speaking on behalf of the new club, spokesman James Whiteford said: “This merger will bring together the best of what both clubs had to offer in order to provide the swimmers of Hawick and Teviotdale with a larger and stronger single club.”
To assist in a smooth transition for the clubs’ members, coaching staff have been assisting in training both clubs since May and there has been greater interaction between the swimmers during training and at competitions.
Land training for both outfits has also been mixed and brought together with parent helpers from both clubs assisting.
“The new committee and coaching team are very much looking forward to combining their skills and experience to drive the new club forward and build upon the successes attained in the past,” added Mr Whiteford.
Information on the new club and structure will soon be available on the noticeboard within Teviotdale Leisure Centre and a revised Facebook page will also be available.
