THE fantastic weather during April meant that the wicket was the firmest any player had seen in the Borders for a long time.
And over at Huntlyburn, St Boswells turned on the heat to grab their second win of the season against Melrose.
The hosts won the toss and elected to bat first.
Irvine Robertson and Barry Scott started slowly but surely, before Scott Turnbull yorked Robertson for nine runs.
The dangerous Ally Prabaher was next in and before he could hit out in his usual fashion he clipped a Steven Broom delivery straight off his legs to Jamie Glover standing at square leg for three. Navneet Kumar then came and went for a duck in bizarre fashion – whilst admiring his defensive shot, Ruthven noticed he was out of his crease and snuck up to take the bails off and Melrose were rocking on 31 for 3.
Kyle Paisley and Scott then moved up to respectability with Paisley in particular hitting some lovely off-drives for four, while the dogged Scott dug in and waited for the bad ball to score from. Paisley went next, bowled by Elliott Hunter for 21.
When Scott holed out to Rory Elms off Kathryn White’s bowling for 34, the end was near (75 for 5). Hunter, Elms and White then cleaned up the remaining wickets, leaving Melrose with a below-par total of 95 to defend. Pick of the bowlers was Hunter with 3 for 5 off seven overs.
In response, Bossie openers Eliott Ruthven and Scott Ruthven kept it simple by taking the score past 50 before Robertson celebrated Scott’s wicket with a slower one for 45, and Elliot fell lbw to the same bowler for 14.
Glover and White knocked off the remaining runs, finishing with 15 each unbeaten.
So, Bossie make it two wins out of two so far in their Border League campaign, ahead of a free Saturday this week and a Scottish Cup match at home to Ferguslie on Sunday.
