Girls eventually find their feet in semi

Peebles Under-13s 29

Edinburgh Under-13s 7

PEEBLES played host to Edinburgh at the weekend, but the first quarter saw the reigning champions off to a shaky start.

There were several missed opportunities on goal as the tall Edinburgh defence dominated the Peebles shooting D.

However, feisty play from the Borderers’ defence trio Kerri Dow, Shevaun Smith and Lynsey Robertson helped to keep the hosts in contention and secure a slight lead of 5-4 by quarter-time.

Into the second session, Peebles started to show more attacking play.

A first-class performance from Simone Bailey, making her debut at centre, resulted in a display of accurate passes, boldly followed up by Lindsay Maguire and Alana Craigmile.

More confident shooting from Craigmile and rookie shooter Sarah Hudson saw the goal tally begin to rise, with Peebles gaining a more comfortable lead of 11-6 by half-time.

It was the second half, however, which thrilled the home spectators as Peebles, sensing they were back in control, put on a tremendous show of fast, accurate passing and skilful interceptions.

Midcourt play between Dow, Bailey and Maguire worked well and Hudson began a superb run of shooting, pushing the scoreline to 20-6 in Peebles’ favour with 10 minutes to play. Substitutions in the final quarter brought in the fresh legs of Lauren Neville and Maisie Farer, who put in their best performances to date to help their team pull off a remarkable win and secure a place in the final against Hamilton.

Peebles Under-15s play their semi-final of the Scottish Youth Cup away at Paisley in a mid-week game before finals day on Saturday at the Alistair McCoist Centre in East Kilbride.
