Two young fighters from Galashiels Boxing Club travelled to Danderhall in Edinburgh last weekend to test themselves at the Eastern District Championships.
Ewan Jones, 11, was in the second fight on the card and the youngster recovered from a standing count in the first round, against a far more experienced opponent from Stirling (1314 Club), to go the distance, only to lose on a unanimous decision.
Club chairman Danny Kelly told The Southern: “It was a very brave performance from Ewan in his first-ever contest and he would have learned a great deal from the experience.”
Next up was Scottish novice champion Arix Ross boxing in the semi-finals against Zak Clarkson of Lochend BC Edinburgh. These two lads have faced each other before, having fought in the finals of the Novice Championships. Arix won on that occasion, but it was a reversal this time out with Zak taking the spoils in a very close contest.
“Everyone at Galashiels Boxing Club would like to congratulate both boys involved in the championships, they did their club proud,” added Kelly.
Ahead of the competition, the club received sponsorship in the form of tracksuits from The Salmon Inn, Galashiels.
The pub’s Ian Calder attended a training session and presented the club with their new kit on behalf of the local hostelry. Kelly thanked Ian on behalf of the club.
“The members of Galashiels Boxing Club would like to express their gratitude to the Salmon Inn,” he said, “another local company supporting a local club.”
Both Ewan and Arix wore their new kit last week.
