A glorious September afternoon saw Gala host Selkirk in the final of the Border 20/20 Cup and, with a cracking wicket and slick outfield, a high scoring encounter was anticipated.
Gala were put into bat and got off to a good start with an opening 47-run partnership between Duncan Millar (32) and Stevie Halls (17) before Halls was bowled by Rory Banks.
This brought Josh Irvine to the crease and the No.3 dominated the Gala innings with a blistering 78, including three fours and three sixes, from 50 balls as Gala completed their 20 overs on 159-4.
The pick of the Selkirk bowlers was Banks, who took three wickets for 29, with Gardiner picking up the other wicket.
The Selkirk chase did not start well with the visitors losing Banks and Everitt in the first two overs with 11 runs on the board. Greg Fenton was in at No.4 and, with the exception of a late flurry from Graham, was the only batsman to take the game to the home side with a classy 56 not out as Selkirk ended on 102-6 and a 57 run defeat.
Five of the six Gala bowlers picked up a wicket each, while there also a run out with a great throw from Kevin Gallagher.
Congratulations also went to Dinesh Tharanga who took his 50th 1st XI wicket this season, the first time a Gala player has achieved this since David Ormiston in 1989 (see sporting digest).
