There was a lot of fun and nonsense at Selkirk Golf Club’s pre-season dinner last Friday night.
Guest speakers John Rutherford and Jackson Cockburn regaled the company with hilarious stories from their sporting past, while a good turnout of members and guests enjoyed food, a few drinks and the speeches as an excellent prelude to the campaign.
On Saturday, the season began with a shotgun start for the Captain v President Team Challenge. As usual, the President’s team won, but Jocky Hume lost his match for the first time in 19 years, claiming to have been dazzled by the captain’s “banana breeks” and Nod’s “explosion-in-a-paint factory” outfit. Not a good loser then.
There were two nearest-the-hole prizes, both won by seasoned exponents of the winter golf scene – Tug Wilson and Mitch Thomson. Tomorrow, golfers will be playing in the Archie Smail Memorial Stableford competition.
