Borders Fjordhus 5

Glasgow Accies 1

A POSITIVE start by the hosts saw captain Karen Cornwall sending a cross across the danger area to find Laura Mclean at the back post, who slipped the ball home for the opening goal.

Two minutes had been played and the hosts were 1-0 up.

Accies put together some good passing and were unlucky not to score on several occasions, while Borders keeper Megan Murphy had some super stops in this period of extended visitors’ pressure.

Play raged from end to end with both sides playing an attacking game and the visitors, on 26 minutes, drew level when some slack defensive play by Borders saw the ball scrambled home by the Accies.

Fjordhus finished the half strongly and were awarded several penalty corners, but sadly none were capitalised on.

They started the second half just as brightly, using subs Martha Douglas and Nicola Wealleans to good effect, with the former sweeping across the visitors’ D for Laura McLean to lift the ball over the keeper.

Next, Borders were awarded a penalty corner and Janet Jack teed the ball up perfectly for 15-year-old Emily Newlands to smash the ball into right-hand corner of the goal.

Confidence grew in the Borders side and slick passing, coupled with determined attacking, saw them gain another penalty corner.

Newlands at top strike got her double with another powerful shot.

Borders continued to press and a minute from time Cornwall attacked down the right and fed the ever-alert Mclean, who wrong-footed the oncoming keeper to gain her second goal.
