Double or split – duo cue up new partners

It was tremendous to see a large turnout for the Borders Pool League Doubles as the weather earlier in the week had looked likely to put a damper on the night.

Going for three in a row, Scott Bowers and John Jardine qualified, although with different partners to add a twist to the finals, while both Niki’s A and Waverley A had two pairs qualified from the second division.

Arguably the best display came from Barry Wood and Michael Howell from Dryburgh, while Niki’s A pairing Craig Reid and Kev Mackay look the favourites, although there are always a few shocks come finals day.

Qualifiers: D. Laidlaw & S. Thomson (St Boswells Legion); C. Reid & K. Mackay and S. Bowers & S. Simpson (both Niki’s A); A. Peoples & I. Allan (White Swan Kelso); J. McKechnie & J. Callaghan and R. Shiel & J. Jardine (both Waverley A); B. Wood & M. Howell (Dryburgh); D. McGurk & M. Ramsey (Bridge A).

Unfortunately, due to the weather, all the Borders players failed to reach Aberdeen for the Scottish trials and with various others in the same boat there will be another day arranged for one or two remaining places to be won in the Scottish team.

Hopefully this will spur them on and take pool in the Borders to the next level.
