ON A sunny Saturday afternoon at Earlston High School, Kelso Ladies faced Liberton Ladies 1st XI in the penultimate match of the 2013/14 East League hockey season.
Kelso knew the game against the visiting team would be a tough test but were determined and committed to proving their worth.
Liberton started on the front foot putting early pressure on the Kelso backline but the defence stood strong. The match continued at a high tempo with Kelso also continuing to threaten the Liberton goal but their chances went wide.
A speedy, Liberton side broke the deadlock with a quick attacking break. Goalkeeper Becky Gibson was pressurised but committed into a one on one face off but Liberton Ladies managed to slot an impressively angled ball into the net.
A foul in the Kelso defending circle gave Liberton Ladies the opportunity to extend their lead. A well executed corner concluded with a deflection into the Kelso goal.
Just before the break, Kelso pulled one back through Suzanne Henry when she deflected a superbly placed Natasha Cranston ball to take the scoreline to 1-2 going into the second half.
After the restart Kelso continued to exploit the Liberton defence and were rewarded with a penalty corner.
Henry swiftly injected the ball to the top of the circle where it was controlled by Katie Francis before making a fine strike which was once again deflected into the goal by Henry.
Kelso grabbed their third with Cranston on hand to score an inspiring goal from the top of Kelso’s attacking circle. Using her speed, accuracy and technique she dug deep and converted a low sweep passed the Liberton goalie.
Continuing to pressurise, Kelso were able to seal the deal through a fine rebound goal from Francis.
Kelso Ladies wish to thank the White Swan, Earlston, for providing match teas throughout the 2013/14 season and SJ Cranston Building and Tweed Chiropractic Clinic for their continued sponsorship.
The team will travel to face Boroughmuir Ladies 1st XI on Saturday to play their final game of the season. Supporters welcomed and appreciated.
