THE golf season opened last Friday with the traditional pre-season dinner.

Members and guests enjoyed an evening of fine food, splendid speeches – especially from guest speakers Les Millar and Billy Rutherford – and excellent entertainment from Darren Knox who accompanied himself on guitar.

A lively “third half” was hosted by Alan Wheelans and featured some of the golf club’s finest talent.

On Saturday, the annual president v captain match took place with Jocky Hume’s (president) team beating Jock Easson’s by 20 holes to 17.

Junior coaching from Murray Cleghorn takes place at 9.45am on the next two Tuesdays. It is open to all and it’s free.

Obviously not in need of any coaching is new member Alf Porilo, who began his first round at Selkirk with holes in one at the first two holes. AM
