PEEBLES NETBALL celebrated their fourth Scottish Schools win in five years this week with their S3 team retaining their title following a tremendous performance against St Andrew’s Academy of Paisley.

The final scoreline, 28-13 reflected the dominance of the Peebles side which led from start to finish, becoming the only current schools’ team to win the championship two years in succession. Peebles S1s were also delighted to achieve runners-up slot in their age group, losing to Arbroath HS in the championship final by 17-26, although both teams had won two quarters and lost the other two.

And for good measure, Berwickshire HS finished off what was a tremendous day for Borders teams with a sparkling performance against Aberdeen’s Albyn School in the plate section of the championship to lift their first plate championship title.

A record 68 Scottish secondary schools entered teams in this year’s championships. Schools from Orkney to Argyll and Aberdeen to the Borders entered.

Peebles teams played regional qualifying matches, followed by second round matches, quarter-finals and semi-finals to reach the final.

Peebles’ S1 team beat Berwickshire, Earlston, Newbattle, Glasgow’s Castlehead, East Renfrewshire’s St Ninian’s, and Arbroath Academy on their way to the final.

Peebles S3 team beat Carluke, Hamilton College, Kyle Academy, Arbroath and Hyndland.

Peebles has won the Scottish Schools title three times before, with their S1 teams in 2007 and 2010 and their S2 team in 2010, and were runners-up three times previously.

The members of the Peebles teams had originally been spotted through talent identification at Peebles Netball festivals, and invited for training with the club. This year’s Peebles Netball Festival will be on Sunday, May 15. Application forms can be downloaded from the Peebles Netball website

Deadline for entries is Monday, May 9.
