Health and fitness student Charlie Carstairs put in a grade-A show to take the Champion of Champions 150m Classic title.
A large crowd witnessed the 19-year-old from Lasswade claim the £500 first prize at Earlston High School’s six-lane grass track.
Held for the first time at Earlston as a result of refurbishments to Tweedbank’s athletics track, Carstairs put his experience of running in the Scottish senior leagues at 200m and 400m to good use to claim his heat.
Lining up against a top-quality field of Kevin Turner (26m), Richard Eland (25m), Tommy Finkle (19m), Billy Martin (16m) and Cameron Grieve (15m), the teenager held his nerve and caught the field with five metres to go with a powerful finish and a time of 15.42 seconds, from Finkle of TLJT and Jed AC’s Grieve respectively.
Carstairs, who headed off on holiday to Turkey on Monday, said: “This was a great way to end the season.
“I felt that in my heat I didn’t allow myself to relax enough, but in the final as I set myself down into the blocks, I was confident I could run faster.
“Once I edged my way past Tommy Finkle, I could see the tape was mine.”
In the 1,200m Classic event, Adam Craig of TLJT entered unknown territory as he lined up for the race.
Throughout this season, the 18-year-old sports coaching student has raced over only 800m.
However, Craig showed no signs of lacking experience at this distance by claiming the win in a time of three minutes and eight seconds, a full four seconds quicker than handicapper Don Campbell expected.
He said: “I felt very confident that I could extend my distance running my usual pace.
“I felt good throughout and when I hit the front with over 400m to go, the running form was still as it should be. It was a great moment for me crossing the line and breaking the tape.”
Victory in the junior 150m went the way of nine-year-old Archie Fuller of Chirnside who once again demonstrated strong front running, and the youths’ 150m was won by the ever-improving Philippa Robertson to give her a memorable double victory, having earlier won the 120m.
