KELSO U13s’ fine season continued on Sunday when they reached the finals day of the U13 20/20 Scottish Cup at Goldenacre, Edinburgh.
A Kelso junior team last reached this stage 26 years ago.
In the semi-final against Clydesdale, a top team from Glasgow, they put on a good all-round performance. Bowling first, Kelso ousted Clydesdale for 65 with Will Thompson taking 3 for 15 and Sammy Richards 2 for 13.
Kelso batted very sensibly, reaching the total for the loss of only two wickets. A great batting performance from the captain, Robbie Thompson, with 30 not out, plus a hard-hitting 25 from Richards, ensured they made the total with six overs to spare.
In the final they met Grange, probably the top Edinburgh club with more than 150 youngsters to choose from. The Kelso side, by contrast, are all local lads with half of the team aged between between eight and 11.
Winning the toss, Grange batted first and reached a very creditable 108 for 6. The young Tweedsiders fielded and bowled well against strong opposition with Nick de Bolle taking 2 for 29.
He then opened the batting, getting a solid 21 while wickets fell around him to a strong bowling attack. Kelso ended their innings on 60 -9.
A great achievement by the young Kelso players to make the last two in Scotland in the U13 age group. The experience of playing against top teams can only develop their skills further and help prepare them for finals in future seasons.
