With sponsorship secured for the fifth year in succession from the Borders-based firm Aitken Turnbull Architects, the U13 and U15 netball leagues commenced in September, featuring 14 teams across four clubs.
The U13 league featured six teams this season, playing in a round robin format over four play days, with the league winners decided on points gained during the 15 matches played.
Last weekend, Peebles Netball hosted the final play day for the U13 league with three teams in contention for the title – Peebles, Earlston A and Hawick A – depending on the scores from the final matches.
On the day, however, Peebles U13s were most determined not to let the chance of silverware slip through their hands. Drawn against fellow contenders Hawick A, the host team put on an eye-catching display, leaving little room for their opponents to make their mark. Led confidently by captain Emma Raeburn at goal shoot, Peebles soared to an 11-0 opening quarter which extended to 20-nil by half-time.
To their credit, Hawick battled back, making several smooth moves into their shooting area, but nervous misses on goal resulted in no move in their scoreline until the final minutes of the game.
The final score of 44-1 in Peebles’ favour gave them the convincing win they needed to secure their first league title.
However, Hawick A came away with well-deserved bronze medals, on account of their previous performances, with Earlston A awarded the silver on points countback.
John Mackenzie from Aitken Turnbull Architects attended the event to present the trophy.
The U15 league moves into semi-final stage with all eight teams playing in championship or plate matches, and the finals on March 1.
Final league standings (five games played): 1, Peebles 25 points; 2, Earlston 21; 3, Hawick A 17; 4, Hawick B 13; 5, Earlston B 8; 6, Berwickshire 3.
