NETBALLING Borderers are jumping in anticipation this week as the Aitken Turnbull Border League begins a new season at the Gytes in Peebles on Sunday.

Now into its second year, the league has expanded to provide both under-13 and under-15 sections, involving a total of 15 teams and around 150 players from Peebles, Berwickshire, Earlston and Hawick, with regular matches taking place.

Another change for the coming season is the staging of the league in five different venues, giving spectators across the region a chance to see a bit of the action.

Last season’s league was won by Peebles, and their coach, Linda Nicholson, is hoping for another successful year for her teams.

She told TheSouthern: “The league has given netball in the Borders a huge boost.

“It produced winning teams not just locally, but nationally, with both Peebles and Berwickshire going on to win national titles.

“We are very grateful to the sponsor, Aitken Turnbull Architects, for supporting us once again. This has enabled the league to expand to cater for even more teams and players.”

The league kicks off at the Gytes at 10am on Sunday, with six matches being played during the day. Action then moves to Earlston on October 30; Berwickshire on November 27; and Hawick on January 15.

Additional matches will be played on Tuesdays from 8–9pm at Queens Centre in Galashiels in November.
