Eyemouth’s darts world champion Gary Anderson is putting the record straight after claims he intentionally lost a Premier League match against Adrian Lewis in 2011.
Anderson, 44, led the match 3-0 but, with Lewis suffering “disgraceful” abuse from the crowd, allowed the Englishman to reel off eight legs in a row to secure an 8-3 victory.
When asked if he intentionally lost, Anderson told BBC Scotland: “I didn’t want to win a game where that happened; I thought it was a disgrace.”
However, in a message on Twitter, Anderson said: “I didn’t answer that question as I meant to. I would never intentionally lose a match or step onto the oche and give anything other than my best, but that night I thought the crowd behaviour was so disgraceful I lost all my motivation to win and could not focus at all on playing, and my game fell apart.”
