Glasgow University II 2

Reivers moved to within touching distance of winning the league championship on Saturday, and on Sunday, ejected the fancied Glasgow University II out of the District Plate competition. The Saturday trip to Edinburgh to face Inverleith was the Tweedbank team’s chance to start closing in on the league title.

And, in the end, Reivers had too much grunt and grit for the young Edinburgh side. Goals from Graham Lofthouse (2), Andy Bell and Spencer Pitman gave them a comfortable 4-0 half-time lead.

Inverleith struck back in the second half with two quick counter-attacking goals, before Pitman grabbed a second, and Max Kulow marked his welcome return with a goal to restore the four goal advantage.

With the league points in the bag, attention now turned to the cup match on Sunday.

What a difference confidence makes: last season Reivers had endured a heavy cup defeat to this same Glasgow side.

This year it was the Borders team who surprised their opponents by dominating proceedings right from the passback.

Reivers’ opener was a textbook counter-attacking move with Pitman setting up Jonathan Fletcher for the simplest of finishes and Andy Bell added a second.

Shell-shocked, Glasgow reorganised themselves for the second half and eventually the university men pulled one back. Reivers responded with Stuart Ramsay shimmying past several players to score. A conceded penalty flick made the last 10 minutes nervy, but Reivers saw the match out safely.

The sponsors’ man of the match went to Jonathan Fletcher on Saturday, and Stuart Ramsay on Sunday.
