Vics break Hearts to go top

SELKIRK Victoria replaced rivals Hearts at the top of the league last weekend after a hard-fought win at Yarrow Park.

The home side started brightly in tricky conditions and Darren Munro opened the scoring after 20 minutes.

William Mercer curled a free kick into the near post and Munro flicked the ball past the keeper for his 15th goal of the season.

The boggy conditions stopped both sides from gathering momentum, but the visitors found an equaliser in route-one fashion shortly before half-time, Hearts striker David Mallinson latching onto a flicked header and smashing the ball past Jamie Lyall in the Selkirk goal.

Hearts took the lead five minutes after the break.

A neat cross from the left touchline was headed into the bottom corner by Jamie Thomson leaving Lyall with no chance.

Selkirk responded well and on the hour Mercer equalised.

After cutting in from the left wing, his speculative effort from thirty yards was fumbled into the net by the visiting ‘keeper. The home side pushed for the winner and it came with 15 minutes to go.

Substitute Scott MacFarlane used his strength to shrug off the Hearts centre half and drill the ball brilliantly into the bottom corner from the edge off the box.

Ryan Clapperton should have made it four for the Vics towards the end, but he somehow ballooned the ball over the bar from a couple of yards out after some great work from Munro.

Selkirk remain undefeated in the league this season and face Tweedmouth at the Five Arches this weekend (2pm).
