Vale to the fore

Vale proved too strong for their Castle Douglas opponents, but managed to put some gloss on the result with a little generosity from the match officials, writes Dave Ryce.

The home side came close to making a breakthrough on several occasions, most notably when defender Ryan McKenzie bundled a Daniel McAleavy free kick against the post.

But six minutes before the break, Danny Rennie broke the deadlock when a deflected John Ross Kerr shot found him at the back post for a simple tap-in. Rennie had looked offside, but the nearside linesman, who had already made some dubious calls against the Vale forward line, this time found in their favour.

Ten minutes into the second half Kerr rounded keeper Vinnie Parker before shooting home well.

In the 74th minute, Scott Gormley appeared to trip over the ball while making his way into the box and to the astonishment of everyone was awarded a penalty, which Gormley dispatched.

In the closing minutes, Gormley scored a second, sweetly chipping Parker after Rovers were caught on the break.
