Vale find no answer to big ask at Spartans

Despite Vale’s recent run of form, it was always going to be a big ask for them to come away from the home of the defending champions with anything to show for it.

Conceding a goal just three minutes into the game made that task all the more difficult. Spartans won a free kick on the edge of the box and Jack Beesley’s curler was well blocked by Vale keeper Mark Wilson, but the rebound fell to centre-half Ally MacKinnon, who poked the ball over the line.

Mike Bruce headed against the bar and Craig Stevenson went close with a free kick as Spartans searched for another, but the Innerleithen men held out until half-time.

The second half followed much the pattern of the first. Ten minutes into the second half, Spartans notched the killer goal. A Douglas pass sent Jack Beesley bearing down on goal and he calmly knocked the ball under the diving Wilson. There looked little chance of Vale making a comeback as the Spartans defence kept them on a tight leash and home keeper Kevin Swain was rarely tested.
