VALE’S hopes of progressing to the quarter-final stages of the South Challenge Cup were scuppered on Saturday by a Keith McLeod double.
The hosts took the lead on 15 minutes after Willie Bremner and Taylor Aitchison clashed in a 50/50 on the penalty spot, only for the ball to spill to Chris Anderson, who drilled it into the net.
The visitors equalised against the run of play through Scott Gormley, who got in behind the Spartans defence before slotting the ball home.
Spartans restored their lead shortly after. A bullet from the head of Ally MacKinnon left the Vale keeper with no chance.
Ten minutes later, Spartans extended their advantage when McLeod beat James Young to the ball to head it beyond O’Brien.
Frustrations spilled over as the game moved into the closing stages and Vale coach Mikey Weir was sent from the dug-out for remonstrating when Taylor Aitchison and Keith Lough found themselves on the deck following midfield challenges.
McLeod put the icing on the Spartans cake with 12 minutes to go when picking up the ball 25 yards out before rounding O’Brien to slot the ball into the empty net.
