Souters fail to progress, but finish on a high

Selkirk 2

Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale 1

SELKIRK ended their Qualifying League campaign on a high note on Saturday despite not making it through to the League Cup preliminary stages.

Mike McKinnon’s men recorded their second victory in the pool stages with a convincing win over Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale.

Selkirk FC vice-chairman Ross Anderson told TheSouthern: “It was a great result and performance. We looked the better side from start to finish.”

The first half of the game at Yarrow Park was very even, with both teams creating chances, the best from Selkirk’s Jamie Gibson who tried to lob the keeper from 45 yards, only to miss by a foot or so.

The scoreline read 0-0 at half-time. After the break, the hosts started well and fully deserved to go into the lead with a well-taken goal from youngster Aaron Butters in the 55th minute.

Lothian Thistle drew level with a very soft penalty kick in the 75th minute.

This looked like the final score before Selkirk sub Jonny Watt finished of a great move to put his team in front with a minute to go.

The Souters finished fourth in Section A on eight points.
