Shiel makes up for spot kick blunder

Hawick Waverley 2

Newtown 2

NEWTOWN got off to a flying start by breaking the deadlock in the first minute.

Scott Leitch was downed in the box by Michael Clark and Steven Swanston netted the resultant spot kick.

On the quarter hour mark Waverley were awarded a penalty. There was to be no joy for the home men, though, as Barry Shiel blasted his spot kick over the bar.

A goal was only delayed, however, for four minutes later Waverley drew level when a Newtown player put the ball into his own net when trying to clear a Kevin McGaughey corner kick.

With 62 minutes gone, Mark Tokely restored Newtown’s lead with a fine headed goal.

But with 10 minutes remaining, Shiel grabbed an equaliser.
