Selkirk add to Gretna’s woes

GRETNA must be sick of the sight of Borders opposition at present.

After their first team were thumped 9-1 at home by Vale of Leithen and the club’s under-19s lost 4-0 to their Gala Fairydean counterparts the previous weekend, already-relegated Selkirk secured their most comfortable win of the season against the Raydale Park side.

A double from Daryl Burdett and a late Jamie Gibson strike secured only the second league win of the season for the Yarrow Park club.

Midfielder Burdett, who has been one of Selkirk’s best performers this season, opened the scoring with a superb strike on 20 minutes.

Gretna’s task was made harder by the red card handed out to Alex McAllister for a late challenge, but Selkirk right back Lee Stephen was also told to shower early for a similar offence 10 minutes later.

John Dodds made a number of good saves while Jamie Higginbottom and Jason Inglis performed well in central defence, allowing Burdett to double the hosts’ lead with a header just before half-time.

To cap a fine display, Gibson prodded the ball past Gretna stopper Connor Grant on 84 minutes.
