Rovers take the plaudits in amazing 12-goal thriller

Leithen Rovers 8

Hawick Waverley 4

IN what turned out to be an amazing game, Leithen took an early lead through an Alan McMath goal.

Shortly afterwards, Callum Hope put Waverley on level terms, heading home a Scott Craig cross.

Midway through the first half, Barry Shiel netted from the penalty spot to put the Teries in front.

But seconds before the interval Darren Thomson slotted away an equaliser for Rovers.

The goals continued to flow after the break when Leithen scored early on through McMath.

Within minutes Rowland Gibb got on the homesters’ scoresheet with a penalty.

After Taylor Hope had nodded home a Callum Hope cross to reduce the leeway, Andrew Jackson made it a nap hand for the Innerleithen men.

Within minutes, Gibb put Waverley into further arrears with a second penalty. Leithen followed this up with a goal from Greg Shortreed to make it 7-3.

Taylor Hope then got amongst the goals again, scoring the fourth penalty of the game.

But in the closing stages, Rovers’ Darren Stewart completed the scoring.
