Rovers did not roll over

Leith Athletic 2

Peebles Rovers 0

MAURICE GORDON reports from Muirhouse

DESPITE going out of the League Cup, Peebles gave a good account of themselves against Leith and more than held their own in the second half.

It was all the city side in the first half, however, and in the first minute Darren Lavery struck the Peebles post with a header from close in before the ball rebounded away to safety.

Leith continued to have most of the early pressure and opened the scoring after 13 minutes.

From a Christopher Barrie right-wing cross, Darren Moonie laid the ball back to substitute Euan Campbell, who gave the diving Bruce Callan no chance with a blistering shot into the bottom corner of the net. The hosts were playing some excellent football and added a second 12 minutes later when Jason Steven picked out Moonie, who beat Callan all ends up.

Peebles came close to reducing the leeway when Craig Edgar seemed almost certain to score with a terrific free-kick attempt until John Falconer tipped the ball over his crossbar with a splendid one-handed save.

Then, just before half-time, after collecting a Fraser Henderson pass, Allan Chalmers beat three Leith defenders during a mazy run into the Athletic box, but could only hit the side-netting from close in.

Peebles were the first to show after the break when, after a neat Rovers build-up down the left, Falconer foiled Elliot Black with a fine save at close range.

Back again came the visitors with a John Leitch left-wing cross picking out Chalmers, who could only scoop the ball over the Leith crossbar from six yards.

Then shortly afterwards, after collecting a Chalmers pass, Kevin Martin fired narrowly over the crossbar with a spectacular effort from long range.

Leith should really have increased their lead with 11 minutes remaining when, from a Jamie Burstow corner-kick on the right, William Bremner headed just over the Peebles crossbar from right in front of goal.

Leith were now putting in a strong late finish, but both Combe and Campbell were off-target.

Peebles: B. Callan, E. Black, K. Martin, N. Cairns, K. Harper, J. Innes, A. Chalmers, C. Morrison (C. Leslie), C. Edgar, F. Henderson and J. Leitch.
