Pennypit men shine in dull clash

Vale of Leithen 0

Preston Athletic 2

Innerleithen welcomed the members of the Groundhoppers UK Lowland League weekend with Victoria Park bathed in sunshine, but unfortunately for the 300-plus crowd the teams failed to sparkle during what was a dull 90 minutes.

Vale made a decent start, with a James Elliot shot bringing out a good save from visiting keeper Sean Brennan and Jason Stevens heading a Darren White cross just wide, but it was Preston who took the lead a few minutes before half-time when a speculative ball into the area found defender Jack Bruce, who guided it inside the far post.

The Vale challenge fell away in the second half as the Panners gained in confidence.

A break of the ball allowed Max Todd through on goal, but McQueen came off his line smartly to block. From the resulting corner, the ball fell to Alistair Roy who sent a low shot through a crowd of players to double Preston’s lead.

Max Todd curled a shot onto the bar as Preston looked to press home their advantage.

At the other end, James Elliot sliced a shot wide with the goal at his mercy, while Jason Stevens saw a shot blocked on the line by Bruce.
