Munro secures top spot for Victoria

Hawick Legion 1

Selkirk Victoria 2

SELKIRK VICTORIA moved to the top of the league thanks to a late winner from substitute Darren Munro.

Hawick had the edge in a non-scoring first half which saw Jory Robertson and Callum Hope both come close to breaking the deadlock.

With the wind behind them in the second half Selkirk created a few chances early on. However, Hawick opened the scoring with a breakaway goal.

Selkirk had a free kick deep in the attacking third, but as the ball was cleared it fell to Hope, who ran clear on goal. His attempt was saved well by Jamie Lyall, but the rebound fell to William Monteith, who tapped the ball home.

The Vics weren’t behind for long. William Mercer found himself in space and he struck the ball into the bottom corner at the near post. And, as the Vics piled on the pressure in the last half hour, the second goal seemed inevitable.

It came with five minutes left, when Munro scored from close range with his first goal since his return from a long-term injury.
