Liddesdale break Hotspur hearts

Hearts of Liddesdale 5

Gala Hotspur 4

GALA Hotspur’s promotion hopes took a huge blow despite a spirited display against high-flying Hearts of Liddesdale.

Travelling to Newcastleton with 14 players, including coaches Jimmy Dunbar and Fred Blackie named on the bench, Spurs found themselves three down within 20 minutes as they were unable to handle Hearts’ pace and width.

But a Garry Fraser header from a Scott Nightingale corner before half-time gave Gala some hope.

After hitting the post, Nightingale scored with a precise lob and then Liam Hardie equalised with 20 minutes to go.

But Hearts struck two quickfire goals, aided by some poor Gala defending.

Nightingale hit the post again and Hearts’ goalkeeper made a brilliant stop from a Hardie free kick, before Nightingale’s solo goal set up an exciting finish.
