A goal from substitute Andrew McFarlane in the closing stages of the game earned Hawick Legion a place in the second round of the Waddell Cup in a somewhat remarkable encounter, which was abandoned and then restarted.
Legion ruled the opening half hour of the match, but failed to turn pressure into goals.
The home side were in turn sent reeling when Peebles’ Fin Muir netted against the run of play.
Euan Gray, however, put Legion on level terms before the break after latching on to a long ball from Callum Hope. With five minutes of the second half gone, Peebles restored their advantage through a top-notch headed goal from Leon Miller.
Legion came bouncing back and Stevie Lowe snatched an equaliser. Not long afterwards, following a snow blizzard, referee Alex Laidlaw abandoned the game.
However, before the teams had reached the changing rooms the sun had come out and after a discussion it was decided that the cup match would go on again.
This proved to be good news for the Legion. With minutes remaining, Andrew McFarlane put victory the Hawick men’s way in hitting home a Scott Duncan cross.
