Underdogs Lauder shot out of the traps at Runciman Park on Saturday and held on to win the first piece of silverware of the 2013/14 amateur football season.

A first half treble from Steven Kerr stunned Kelso Thistle who are currently chasing promotion at the top of the Border Amateur League division C table.

In a highly entertaining match Lauder led 3-0 at the break but Kelso were stung into action in the second half leaving the 150 or so supporters holding a collective breath right up until the final whistle.

And, having not won a thing for four seasons it was with much jubilation that the Lauder lads collected their prize. Captain Mark Williamson told TheSouthern: “That was really tough. We played really well to go three nil up at half time but we knew they would come out fighting in the second half.

“They beat us 4-0 in a league game earlier this season and we definitely went into the match as underdogs but maybe that worked in our favour. I’m really pleased with the way everyone dug deep in the second half and held off a really strong challenge from Thistle.”

“We are absolutely delighted to be picking up some silverware.”

Williamson described Kerr’s performance in the opening half as “phenomenal” and, having watched the Lauder number 5 dance round the Kelso defence to score twice in as many minutes, few would disagree. Number three came just as the first half moved into injury time when Kerr again found himself in space to chip the ball over the head of Kelso keeper Scott Triebel.

After the restart Thistle began to claw their way back into the game when firstly Scott Turnbull scored from close range and then, after Lauder had notched another through Andy Crawford, Craig Blair slipped one in at the back post just as the match moved into a lengthy period of injury time.

Plucky Lauder held out however and their delight was obvious as referee Raymond Hume signalled the end of a match which was a fantastic advertisement for amateur league football.
